OCEAN FISHING REPORT

Submitted by Lee Mac

Here is a quick update about fishing on the north coast over the past week.

  • Coho are around Prince Rupert and Kitimat in good numbers. Anchovy and cut plugs are working well. We are seeing a lot of 4-5 inch herring around this year so picking a spoon in this size will be productive.
  • Chinook fishing has slowed down, but we are still seeing some good size fish mixed in with all the coho.
  • The weather has been great and allowed for good offshore halibut fishing. The mudraker jig has been working well for us lately. A spreader bar with a flashing hoochy tipped with a XL herring has worked very well for us over the past couple of weeks. These flashing hoochy rigs are available at Oscars.
  • Crabbing has been excellent and prawning has been good. Oscars has a good supply of prawn bait before your next trip. They also have the wire cages for your crab bait. I highly recommend these as they help your traps fish longer.

We will be up at Meziadin for the next week fishing for Sockeye so until my next report, tight lines.

LAKE FISHING REPORT

Submitted by Tukii Lodge

The summer heat has brought some slower lake fishing, but the bite has been consistent in the early mornings or late evenings, even if slower.  The rainbow and char fishing has been reported to be consistent and good taking on Ruby eyed wigglers and even on the fly.

Here on Babine Lake, we have started to see a few sockeye jumping, but not very many yet though.  After observing the fish coming in, we think we will hit the 800,000 by Augusts 1st at the Tyee test fishery. We are pretty hopeful that the fishery will be opened.

Here at Tukii Lodge we offer cabins, guided trips and boat rentals perfect for a family vacation or an angler’s escape to commune with the fish. We do have a few openings for the rest of the summer so call today to book before the rush. We are offering both half day and full day guiding, half day for $450 plus GST and full day for $750 plus GST.  All the fishing gear is included.

RIVER FISHING

Submitted by Ron Wakita

The fishing on the Kitimat River has slowed down this week with smaller tides and low river conditions. To have better success, we found that the best results fishing were either early morning or late in the evenings. A friendly reminder that the Kitimat River closes for retention of chinook on July 31st, so now is a great time to get out there before the river closes again. Before going out, come talk with us in the shop or check the DFO site for the most up to date fishing regulations.
