How Much Does it Cost to go Salmon Fishing On the Blackwater
''There is a time for everything and a season for every activity...........''
Every year has new beginnings, and Robert Burns the Scottish poet wrote about this in his poem Auld Lang Syne which we traditionally use to bid farewell to the old year and welcome in the new.
Auld Lang Syne can be translated to ''days gone by'' or ''old times''. We often look back to ''the good old times'' and on the Blackwater we hear stories from the older generation of the monster fish that used to run the river, and that they came in great numbers.
I feel blessed that we still have a good number of salmon running into the Blackwater and look forward to the coming season with hope and anticipation.
For many of my friends the 1st February is the beginning of our new year as it is the opening day of our new season on the River Blackwater. We have been waiting for this day for weeks, like a child waiting for Christmas. We are looking forward to meeting up with our fishing friends who we miss terribly during the closed season.
We look forward to trying out our new fishing gear or new technique that we have read about during the winter months. We dream of catching the first salmon on our beloved river.
Many of us will meet at the hut on Kilmurry on the Opening day (1st February) to celebrate the beginning of the new season, to toast the river in the hope for safe fishing and many happy days together fishing this year.
We welcome you to the fishery on our new year, to put aside the old, and look forward to the new season ahead.
''For times gone by, my dear,
For times gone by,
We will take a cup of kindness yet,
For times gone by......''
