Blackwater Lodge Newsletter - June 10, 2013
The Heat is ON - and so are the Fish!
Fishing had been comparatively quiet since mid-May even though there were reports of a fair number of fish running the river.
Last week conditions looked very difficult with a heatwave hitting Southern Ireland. Not a cloud in the sky & blazing sunshine every day.
But we can never predict the behaviour of the salmon! We kicked off with a six pounder last Sunday, a 9 pounder on Tuesday, three grilse to one rod on spinner on Thursday, another grilse on Friday.
Best Day of the Season so far - Saturday, June 8!
We then topped it all with the Best Day of the Season so far with six fish to 11.5lb.(including fish of 10.7 & 8.5lb) - and all this with air temperatures soaring to 25ºC in the shade @ 17.00 in the evening!
Eleven fish for the week in such challenging conditions was a remarkable feat for just 53 rod days.
This was the river at 15.30 today. Ballyduff gauge 0.30m & falling & clarity 5+ feet.
The river has been falling steadily since the last small flood on May 29th.
11 fish caught for the week to Saturday, June 8th.
Prospects
This was the rainfall radar picture at 23.30 today (June 10). Steady falling right through the catchment.
With the river having fallen to 0.30m at Ballyduff, this will be very welcome as we are sure to have a fresh on the river tomorrow which should drop the water temperature on the upper river from it's current high level of almost 16ºC. The lower is currently at 10ºC.
There are quite good runs of both grilse and large salmon coming into the river off every tide in the last few days. The prospects for the coming week are looking superb as we have broken weather for the week! The heatwave is over.....................................................................................................................
