Blackwater Lodge & Salmon Fishery Newsletter - February 19, 2012

The Best February for years!

After an extremely good start with plenty of fish running the river, we had  five springers
caught  up to the 14th. and none for the second half of the month.

The  five fish were caught for only 30 rod days for the 11 days from February 3 to 14. The total rod days for the month were only 79.

There were plenty of reports of fish running in the first 2 weeks including one from Cappoquin of 22 seen going through in one day on the 6th. In the second half of the month fish were still being seen, but proved elusive to catch.

To date I have heard of just one fish caught above Fermoy and no fresh fish have been reported sighted on the upper part of the river yet.

This is the river today - March 3 - with the gauge at 0.42m.
This is absolutely perfect fly height & I would class it as medium/high summer level.
The clarity is excellent at at least 4 feet.

yesterday the river was at the lowest level (0.41m) since the start of the season. There was 6mm rain overnight which has brought it up a centimetre this morning but the forecast is dry for the coming week so conditions should stabilise with excellent prospects - especially for the fly - for the coming week.

There are good numbers of fish being seen especially up to the 17th., but catches have fallen somewhat. Spring fish go off the take very quickly, & I think that a lot of the fish that are being seen
have been in the river since the start of the season.

Hopefully the river  will continue to drop back quickly to fly order once again.

Booking for 2012
Bookings are coming in much faster than last year, so now is the time to reserve place
- especially for the prime weeks towards the backend of the season where availability
is now getting limited.  If you're in a country outside the Eurozone, now is still a good time
to book & pay  as the € remains weak against other currencies, particularly the £ Sterling & US$.
If you book and pay in full now you can benefit from our 1% per month early payment discount.

Our prices are available on our website.
