Blackwater Lodge Newsletter - June 25, 2011
Biggest Flood of the Season Today - June 25th.
This is the Blackwater peaking at 1.50m at Ballyduff this afternoon.
There was plenty of rain throughout the catchment yesterday (Friday). We had 30mm here at Ballyduff yesterday.
90km upriver at Millstreet, it reached the highest level this season, peaking at 1.80m in the early hours of this morning.
The word from the top of the river is that it should be fishable up there tomorrow - certainly with spinner even if a bit high for the fly.
Superb Prospects for Next Week! This is the biggest flood we've had since mid-February, so with the run of fish that we already had before the flood, plus grilse now appearing in good numbers well down the West coast, we should see a bumper run of fish as this flood fines off.
The river should be in perfect order for the coming week, as there is little or no rain forecast.
The clarity of the water was reasonably good at the beginning of the week when 16 fish to 13lb. were caught - all on the upper river.
Wednesday & Thursday were out due to coloured water, but even though the clarity of the water wasn't great yesterday (Friday), 5 fish all around 6-7lb were taken on spinner on the upper beats, including several with sea-lice. The lower beats haven't been fishing well as the fish are all running hard to the upper river.
This is the great advantage of the Lodge Fishery. We can follow the runs of fish, whether they be in our lower six beats from 3 to 10 miles above the tide or to the upper river where we have a further
8 beats from 25 to 45 miles above the tidal limit.
And finally!........................
I went down just below the Lodge to take the picture of the river today for the website snapped this picture of a couple of the locals out jaunting in a horse & trap.
The joys of rural Ireland.....................................................
