FISHING REPORTS - July 20, 2017

LAKES

The local lakes have been fishing quite well. Lots of people have been out catching some nice lake trout! Had a couple reports back from people fishing Babine who did extremely well, catching some nice 8lb char and some large rainbow.

Rainbow Alley is still fishing decent. The stonefly hatch is ON and the hot weather will only help with that and therefore improve your fishing!

Remember that kids don't care how big or what type of fish, they just love to be out there making memories and having fun! The Bulkley Valley is full of lakes that are great for teaching your kids/nieces/nephews/friends to fish!

 

SALTWATER

Seek and ye' shall find.  This could be a good slogan for the fishing in Prince Rupert right now.  There are fish but you've gotta do alot of seeking  to find them.  Fortunately the coho have moved in and have made that search a little more fun.  These feisty fish can make for a great time while out on the coast. Running a smaller spoon like the Goldstar coho killer at 30-60 ft can be very productive. As always an anchovy and cut plug will bring fish to the boat as well. A dummy flasher is recommended when the coho are around as I've seen many fish lost when it starts flipping out of the water and dragging a flasher around behind it.  One of my favorite ways to target these fish is to drag around a bucktail on the surface either on a fly rod or a light weight spinning rod.  There is nothing like seeing a coho grab your lure off the surface. We have had reports that there are still chinook around as well and have seen some very nice ones caught over the past week. 

Out of Kitimat, the salmon fishing has been good. The chinook run for the Douglas is tapering off but the coho and chums are following close behind them.  We have had reports of fishermen catching coho around the Money Point and South Sue area. 

Bottom fishing remained good over the past week with a lot of halibut and ling cod being caught. The weather has been good on the coast and has allowed fishermen to get out to those spots that are otherwise inaccessible when the weather is marginal. We've seen a lot of fish taken in the past week on the Gibbs Delta Mudraker and P-Line Hali Drop Jigs. Both of these have been fishing well in assorted colors. As always, the spreader bar with a hali rig and XL herring is still producing very well for these fish.

COPPER RIVER

BULKLEY & MORICE RIVERS

Chinook fishing is open and the river is in great shape!! Moricetown has been fishing well. Lots of ‘jacks’ around, and  a nice 25 pounder was caught recently. A couple fish have been caught at the forks of the Bulkley-Morice but no reports of anything in the Morice yet.

KITIMAT

The river is in beautiful condition and fishing has been pretty great! Last year the river was very low but now the level is great and the water is nice and clean! Chinook fishing has been quite good. Pinks and Chum starting to show up. The odd Coho being caught. Also, a few Sockeye- which is pretty unusual, and there is no retention for them.

SKEENA

From Kitwanga down to Mill Creek is CLOSED for any Chinook fishing.

In Terrace the fishing has been steady. Some nice big ones caught, and tons of ‘jacks’. River is in beautiful shape, still lots of water in the system but it is nice and green!
