SALTWATER The fishing has been a bit of grind over the past week. We have seen a lot of smaller chinook being caught with a few coho starting to show up. We have seen most of the coho up around the Dundas area but have seen a few fish being caught south of there all the way south of Banks Island. This time of year is normally prime fishing time out of Prince Rupert but it has been a slow start. We have seen days where guys will limit out before lunch and other times where it will take 3 or 4 days to get their limit of fish. We've also seen a lot of smaller fish (8-12lb) being caught where normally we see most fish in the high teens and lots in the 20lb range and above. Hopefully we see these larger fish rolling in soon. When in search of chinook, try Edye Pass or Squatarie to start and if the wind and your boat allow it, then Dundas is always a good bet this time of year. Fish around kelp beds if you can find them as the baitfish school up under the kelp which in turn attracts the bigger salmon. When fishing for salmon I always try to present a variety of options to the fish to see what they are keying on. I normally run a cut plug, an anchovy teaser, a flasher and hoochie, and some kind of a spoon. Oscars has all of this gear in stock and the staff there are happy to help you out when picking out gear for salmon. Bottom fishing continues to be good. When the wind is down and fishermen are able to get out to open water, we are seeing very good catch rates of halibut, lingcod and snapper. One of the problems you are likely to encounter when halibut fishing is the ever present mud shark. Most times, you will have to release a few mud shark in between halibut but if you are encountering lots of mud sharks(10+) with no halibut, then it's time to move spots. Try using a couple of rods with spreader bars on them and then one rod with a jig. I find that the movement of a jig will attract more halibut. The P-Line Hali Drop jig or the Gibbs Delta Mudraker are good choices that will bring halibut to the boat. Head down to Oscars and talk to the staff before you head out on your next salt water trip. They will be happy to set you up with all the gear you need. We will be back on the water this weekend and all next week so until next time..........tight lines. Ocean Report by Lee Mac
