Happy New Year and Opening Day February 1st on the River Blackwater

The Gate of The Year

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year;
''Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.''
And he replied;  ''Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God.  That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.''
So I went forth, and finding the hand of God, trod gladly into the night.  And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.

Minnie Louise Haskins

Christmas and the New Year celebrations have come and gone.  For many they are times of celebration and cheer, and for others it is a time of loneliness and sadness, often missing the ones who have gone on before them and reminiscing about the times when the family was together at this time.

For me as I grow a little older, Christmas has changed over the years.  I try to stay away from the shopping centres and plastic Santa's.  I avoid parties and I try to make it a time of peace, with less activity, warm fires, books, country walks, Christmas day swims and really try to delight in the true spirit of Christmas.

For New Year we got up very early and left our house around 4.30am.  Noel and I were as excited as little children waiting to open their presents on Christmas morning.  Anna and Ian were like two teenagers that had been woken up and ushered into a cold car at 4.30am.

We were going fishing.  The River Drowse in Donegal is one of the first rivers in Ireland to open on the 1st January and the water was going to be perfect. We had a great two days fishing, we didn't catch any fish but we met so many wonderful people on the river and the day was so mild it really felt like Spring had arrived.

Thank you to Shane Gallagher and the wonderful people at the fishery for their hospitality.
https://drowessalmonfishery.ie/
The children also enjoyed their time on the river and the little cottage that we were staying in.

This morning I asked Noel to drop me at a place called the Vee in the Knockmealdown mountains and I slowly walked the 3 hours home.  What a refreshing time this was,  freedom as I listened to the song of the birds, running water tumbling down the mountain streams, and the freezing wind was burning my face as I walked the quiet road home.

Thoughts came and went, passing through my mind like clouds floating in the sky.  Some of them I wrote down in my notebook and the others I let float away. Oh what a beautiful country we live in, and how tranquil and alluring is the time spent in the solitude of the mountains or by the river.

This is my New Year Resolution; to search for peace and serenity in all parts of my life knowing that all will be well, and the sun will rise in the East each morning.

For you my friends I wish you the same.

''I have never been happier, more exhilarated, at peace, inspired, and aware of the grandeur of the universe and the greatness of God than when I find myself in a natural setting not much changed from the way He made it''

Jimmy Carter

When Anna and Ian were much younger I would put them in the car and tell them to close their eyes for a few minutes.  When they asked where we were going I would tell them that we were going on a Magical Mystery Tour.

They loved these trips as we explored rock pools at the seashore, mountains, castles, old grave yards and library's and museums were places of interest on the really wet and windy days.  The childlike excitement and enthusiasm was great to watch and it is something that I am blessed to still experience when I go off on my adventures today.

Last year I spent almost 100 days out of Ireland at various Angling shows/fairs, teaching courses and fishing adventures around the world, and each one I found as exciting and interesting as the next.  As the years prance on I have become aware that there is probably not enough of my life left to do all the things I want to do, and to go on all the adventures that I want to go on.

There is no time like the present to organise a few more trips, and this time I would like to bring you with me on my Magical Mystery Tours.  I will be bringing you to the places that I have already been to before and can therefore answer all the questions that you may have regarding travelling, fishing equipment necessary for the trips, types of accommodation and level of endurance required for each location.

In 2019 I will be Hosting trips to Patagonia in March (this trip is full), and Scotland in July.  In 2020 I will be going to Patagonia and Scotland and in 2021 I will be going to Greenland and Scotland.  There are more details and links later in this newsletter.

A lot of these trips are outside our busy times at Blackwater Salmon Fishery and I am blessed that Noel my partner is here to run the fishery when I am not. I am also glad that Noel will be joining me to Patagonia in 2020 and Greenland in 2021.

Patagonia Las Buitreras Seatrout Fishing

Glenda Powell Hosted week 21st March - 28th March 2020 (flights either side of these dates)

The first photo on this newsletter is me with a large sea trout from the Rio Gallegos in Patagonia and is taken a few years ago when I was staying at one of Solid Adventures camps, Las Buitreras. I will be returning with a group this coming March and this trip is full.  The next trip that I will be hosting is in 2020 and I am taking bookings now for this adventure.

Words cannot begin to describe this trip, but Mike Blakely who has been there many times before has made a video which is really worth watching and I have copied the link below.

This trip is luxurious, we stay in a lovely comfortable lodge, with fine wine and food cooked by a great chef and we fish for some of the largest Sea trout in the world for 6 full days.

Please contact me if you would like further details on this trip.

You will not be disappointed.

The Kangia River Lodge Greenland.

Glenda Powell Hosted trip to Greenland 5th-12th August 2021 (flights either side of these dates)

Last July I had the privilege of going to Greenland with one of my clients who over the years has become a very good friend.

I had never been to Greenland and the booking was made in January.  It seemed like a long time until July but the year flew and I really did not know what to expect and I was so excited about this wonderful opportunity.  Greenland is the most remote place that I have ever been to and I found the people welcoming, humble and very friendly.  After a few flights, boat journeys and an adventurous journey where we stopped to watch a whale feeding in the fjord we arrived to camp around 2am. It was still light and we were buzzing with excitement.  I slept very little that night as the guitar came out and we were treated to some wonderful music by some of the people running the camp.

After breakfast we walked across the mountain to the best part of the fishing approximately 3km from the camp.  The walk is a beautiful walk and we watched the Kangia river twisting and turning below.  It was brisk with a slight wind and a very welcome 7 degrees celsius.  We of course had come from Ireland which was having a red hot summer with most of the rest of Europe and it felt refreshing to have these cool temperatures.  I was also recovering from Septicemia and had just got out of hospital 2 weeks before and was grateful that I was able to hike the mountain path - albeit slowly, and reminding myself that a few kgs less body weight would make it much easier.

We arrived at the satellite camp and the guides suggested where each of us should fish that day and some people stayed near the camp and others walked further up the river to the waterfall.  The fish were late this year and there were not as many of them up the river as there should have been at this time but we had a fantastic time.

I caught 29 silver sea run Artic Char and 3 of them over 10lb weight.  I don't think that I have ever caught fish that fight so hard, even the smaller ones felt much much bigger on the rod.  The wind came up a few days and I was glad that I had brought my Lts Switch rod with me which worked very well throwing the bigger weighted flies.  I caught fish on the surface with surface flies and fish with weighted flies and when the fish were there in numbers they were very aggressive.

I had the opportunity to walk across the mountain with other people who were part of our group and this experience has made my trip rich with memories from talking to wonderful people, and sometimes I walked alone by choice.  Never have I felt so small in this vast world and been aware of the grandness of the universe.  It was humbling to think that any problem that I could have would remain very small in this natural setting which has not changed much from the way He made it.

I have an extensive PDF for those interested in coming on this Magical Mystery Tour in 2021 and the prices for 2019 will remain the same if we book soon.

Here is a clip for you to watch.

Father & Sons go fishing

''My father didn't tell me how to live, he lived, and let me watch him do it''

Clarence Budington Kelland

Happy Father's day to all the fathers that we meet on the banks of the Blackwater and on our travels each year. We also remember the fathers that are no longer with us. Their teaching on life, love and values still  leading our thoughts and helping us to make the right decisions even though they may be long gone from this world. Childhood memories and lessons are seldom forgotten.

If you have received one of our Gift Vouchers for Salmon Fishing or Tuition then we look forward to helping you celebrate this special day. We hope the Salmon will be kind to you and reward you for all your hard work raising your family over the years.

We have had the most beautiful weather in Ireland over the past month with temperatures as high as 25 degrees C.  Local thunder storms has kept the Blackwater topped us and She is running at a lovely height for fishing at the moment. The weather has cooled again over the past few days and the water temperature has also dropped.

Fishing has really picked up over the past week and we are catching fish on a daily basis with a mixture of large fish and grilse in the system.  Floating lines with sinking tips and our 'normal' size 8-10 flies are working on a traditional cast and swing method.

To book fishing or tuition then please contact me on Denne e-mail adresse bliver beskyttet mod spambots. Du skal have JavaScript aktiveret for at vise den.

Father and Sons go Salmon Fishing.

A few weeks ago I got an email from Mark Egan who was living in Austraila and was coming 'home' to Ireland to be with his family for a couple of weeks.  He wished to book a day out for his father Declan and brother in law Tom.

They could only come fishing for one day, and Mark informed me that he had some experience but his dad had not, and neither had his brother in law Tom.

They arrived, and we joked that Declan would be the first to catch a fish since he had the least experience of any fishing - never mind salmon fishing.  In fact I found out later that Declan did not even want to go fishing, and was 'encouraged' to spend some special time with his son on this day out.

On Declan's 5th cast ( I thought it was about 10 but he informed me that it was only 5) he hooked and large fish, and about 15 minutes later, with a lot of excitement from all of us we landed his first fish.  It was a lovely 13lb salmon and was kept for a special dinner for all the family.

A couple of hours later, and just before lunch Tom landed his first salmon and safely returned it.

Mark, who had organised this big day out, didn't catch anything this time but had the fun of watching his father and brother in law land two very special fish.

Memories were made, and I am sure that we will see Declan again with a fishing rod in his hands one day soon.

Best wishes

Glenda
