River Dee Salmon & Sea Trout FishingFishDee is one of the popular websites operating through the FishPal family which provides a comprehensive overview of fishing in Royal Deeside. Uniquely almost all of the main salmon and sea trout fisheries in Deeside are profiled on FishDee , with rod availability posted as and when it becomes available. As a result of the wide variety of fishing available from FishDee, there are tremendous opportunities for visiting anglers to discover why the River Dee is one of the worlds truly iconic fisheries.
The 2010 salmon and sea trout season closed on 30th September and it has been pleasing to note the trend of year on year increases in catches continuing, with the total salmon catch from FishDee beats standing currently at 7373, with 2536 sea trout also reported. Adding on catches from other fisheries in the Dee catchment it is anticipated the salmon catch may well be around the 8,500 mark which is slightly above the 50 year average for the River. The sea trout catch has also doubled in the last 2 years although the sea trout catches can fluctuate wildly from season to season; nevertheless this has been a solid result from FishDee beats, to the delight of many anglers. FishPal would like to thank Ken Reid for producing the Dee weekly report from all the fisheries on the Dee. To check availability for 2011 on the Dee click.
Irish Fly FairThis weekend the FishPal team are flying to Galway for the Irish Fly Fair with FishIceland partner Jon Sigurdsson. Jon will be giving a presentation at the show on fishing in Iceland. With another record breaking season, runs arriving 2-3 weeks earlier in most rivers. 75,000 salmon caught in a very short season of 105 days, more mulit-sea winter salmon, which was common about 20 years ago. Lets not forget this was achieved in a year with a volcanic erruption (remember the ash clouds) and a serious financial crisis.
Complementing Jon is FishPal's celebrity fly dresser Paul Little, who will be tying a selection of handpicked flies chosen by international Icelandic fly tyer Skuli Kristinsson. The Irish Fly Fair has secured some of the worlds greatest fly tyers with casting demonstrations from leading instructors. Come and say Hi to FishIceland and FishPal on stand 38
Fishing in the Outer HebridesThe Outer Hebrides provided spectacular sport during May, June, August and September for brown trout anglers, with the lochs of South Uist in particular giving up excellent numbers (2280) of quality fish, the best of which was a 5lb-8oz Loch Grogarry fish caught by Donald Buist during June.
The main runs of salmon/grilse started entering the rivers in early/mid July, which is back to normal run times, unlike the previous three years which had seen the first fish arriving in early August. Numbers of fish showed a healthy increase on 2009 figures, with the majority of grilse in good condition, and averaging three and half to four pound. The majority of Fisheries saw an increase on their 5 year average, with Amhuinnsuidhe having an excellent catch of 445 (5 year average - 200). There were fewer double figure salmon caught, however, Grimersta guest, Mrs. F. McRobbie landed and returned a 47" cock salmon, which was conservatively estimated to weigh 32lb Read more.

Time for Thymallus by Paul ProcterOnce considered a pest the European grayling Thymallus thymullas is currently enjoying favour amongst fly fishers, especially those who seek to extend their season. Remaining active throughout the colder months, grayling can provide us with memorable sport even in the depths of winter. Read more.
The Water Wolf by Paul LittleThere is something mystical and even magical about the fish that sits at the top of the freshwater food chain called Esox lucius. The literal translation from Latin being Water Wolf; the name I think says it all. Could the pikes persona of what is essentially a shy fish have anything to do with the fact that few anglers pursue pike fishing? It may be the weather as some of the best times to hunt these large predators are during the cold months of winter. read more.
